The organisers of the Salcombe Regis Country Fair have announced that it will take place on Thursday, August 26 – and they're appealing for donations to be sold at the stalls to raise money for charity.

The fair would normally have taken place on Thursday, June 3, but it was postponed because of the Covid restrictions that were in place at the time.

It will now start at 2pm on August 26, with the Gittisham Hall Jazz Band striking up to open the event.

Last year's cancellation was only the second since 1972 – the other was caused by the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Over the years, the fair has donated more than £100,000 to local charities as well as supporting the church in Salcombe Regis.

The charities that will benefit this year are Sidmouth Hospice at Home, Sidmouth Surf Life Saving Club, Parkinsons UK – East Devon branch, Sidmouth Living with Cancer and Sid valley Memory Cafe – Admiral Nurse Appeal.

The organisers now need to stock the stalls with a wide range of items such as antiques of all kinds, bric-a-brac, clocks, watches, books, cakes, children's toys, plants, gifts, glassware, china, tools and gadgets, jewellery, accessories, handbags and jigsaw puzzles.

They can't accept large items that would need to be transported by car, as the village will be closed to traffic for the afternoon. Items of linen also can't be accepted.

On the day, free car parking will be available as usual at the Salcombe Regis Recreation Field, where the Scouts will be marshalling the car park. Minibuses will provide transport into the village and back to the car park. Refreshments will be available in the village.

Donations for the Fair will be gratefully received by Mike Newman 01395 513313, Rob Speers 01395 513395 or Tom Griffiths 07962 303158.
