Remembrance under Covid-19 lockdown: Sidmouth pays its respects to those lost in war

Local News by Beth Sharp 9th Nov 2020

A scaled-down, socially-distanced service of remembrance took place at the Sidmouth War Memorial on Sunday, November 8.

A two-minute silence was held at 11am to pay tribute to the men and women who have served and sacrificed to defend our nation.

Those in attendance included representatives form The Royal Navy, various army regiments, old comrades, artic convoy veterans, Royal Air Force veterans and British Red Cross to mention only a few.

Long-serving member Ralph Hickman, of Sidmouth Royal British Legion, said: "It was a successful, short, sharp service, with considerable impact.

"The wreaths were laid quickly and appropriately.

"There were prayers but no hymns. There were representives there from various organisations.

"The service of remembrance is as important in these days of conflict as it always has been, from the days of the first world war, to afganistan.

"Even today our forces are helping their civilian counterparts in dealing with Covid. We must never forget."
