Two Sidmouth artisan food and drink producers won big at this month's Food and Drink Devon Awards.

Sidmouth Gin won a Gold Award for its Sea Truffle Gin and Ebb Tides won a silver award for its Oiishi Earth seaweed flakes.

Sea Truffle Gin was created from a partnership between Sidmouth Gin Company and Ebb Tides Seaweeds.

Sidmouth Gin's owner, John Hammond, said: "We're absolutely delighted with the result, it's our second award winning gin.

"It tells us we're doing the right thing and we can build on that success. Our rum is about to launch and we launched our vodka a few weeks ago."

The gin is created using Pepper Dulse, also known as the Truffle of the Sea, it gives the gin a distinctive perfumed depth with a hint of salt. Saffron is added to compliment the seaweed flavours.

"We didn't expect to find Pepper Dulse here on the beach in Sidmouth, we actually found it while looking for sea lettuce for our vodka," said John.

"Sidmouth isn't just a retirement area, we've got an amazing group of artisan producers right here on our doorstep. There are more things being made here in Sidmouth than people realise.

"Everything we do needs to be anchored to where we are based. That's why we harvest our seaweed right here in Sidmouth."

Barbara King, chair of Food Drink Devon, commented: "Each year we're increasingly impressed with the quality of entries. This year was certainly no exception, a fantastic reflection of the excellence of what Devon's inspiring food and drink producers and dedicated hospitality and retail establishments offer.

"We're proud to celebrate our Awards' ninth anniversary this year, to receive over 250 product entries and over 95 entries into our 'Retail' and 'Hospitality' Awards demonstrates the amazing innovation, vitality and strength in our food and drink industry."

Barbara added: "We're exceptionally proud of our Awards and the opportunity they provide to acknowledge and celebrate Devon's finest. I would like to congratulate all those who won and were shortlisted, our sponsors and those who make our fabulous Awards possible."
