Plans to make some alterations to Sidmouth's former 1922 Social Club to aid its change of use into the Sid Vale Association's new headquarters have been submitted for approval to East Devon District Council.

The Sid Vale Association acquired the Grade II listed building on Church Street in May. The club opened in 1922 as a social venue for men returning from the First World War, according to its blue plaque.

Proposed changes include internal alterations to suit the new usage, roof repairs and the creation of a single parking space in place of the current raised terrace.

A Sid Vale Association spokesperson said: "The acquisition of this building is a significant landmark in the history of the SVA, as it offers the SVA a magnificent headquarters building located conveniently close to the current SVA Sidmouth Museum.

"The SVA is sorry that the 1922 Club had to close, as it has a notable history within the town and was much loved by many in the Sid Valley.

"However, given that closure of the 1922 Club was inevitable, the SVA are grateful to the 1922 Club Trustees for their positive approach in offering the SVA the opportunity to acquire and retain the building as an historic feature in the town."

The application is currently awaiting a decision from the district council.
