Update: Body of woman recovered from rock island off Sidmouth; missing person's family informed

Update Friday 12 August 3.50pm: Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat has said that it assisted in the recovery of the body from a rock island off Sidmouth town beach.

The lifeboats were launched at 3.08pm yesterday afternoon. The lifeboat service had also been involved in the searches on 10 and 11 August.

A spokesperson said: "Sidmouth Lifeboat and Sidmouth 2 were launched to assist the Coastguard with the recovery of a body from the rock island off of Sidmouth.

"The casualty was transferred to Sidmouth 2 and then to Sidmouth Lifeboat to be brought ashore. 

"Police later confirmed that this recovery was in relation to the searches that had been carried out over the previous 36 hours."

The body of a woman has been found today (Thursday 11 August) near Sidmouth, according to police.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious. Formal identification is yet to take place.

The family of 54-year-old Sarah Buckingham from Exeter, who had been reported missing yesterday, have been informed.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "The body of a woman has been located near Sidmouth today, Thursday 11 August.

"Her death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

"Formal identification is due to take place.

"The family of Sarah Buckingham, 54, from Exeter, who was reported missing on Wednesday 10 August, have been made aware."
