Lights and music filled the streets of Sidmouth last Saturday, as carnival returned to town for the first time since 2019.

This is the first time the East Devon carnival circuit has been able to go ahead since the coronavirus pandemic, and excited crowds lined the streets as it was Sidmouth's turn to host the impressive floats and walking entries on Saturday night.

"The Sidmouth Carnival made such an amazing comeback," said onlooker and local resident Maria McCarthy.

"There were huge, impressive floats such the one by Honiton Young Farmers, a number of majorette groups, stilt walkers and many other performers.

"The crowds had turned out in force and hundreds of people lined the route between The Balfour and the esplanade, all clearly having a wonderful time."

Although the return of carnival brought much excitement to the town, it also comes with increased running costs and the carnival committee has now set up a JustGiving page to ensure the event can continue in future years.

A spokesperson for Sidmouth Carnival said: "Running the carnival relies on the generous donations of yourselves and we want to secure the future of the event.

"This year our costs have more than doubled from £1,500 in 2019 to nearly £3,500 in 2022.

"Please help us to raise vital funds by heading to our JustGiving page to donate now. If we do not receive enough donations there will not be a carnival next year."

The committee are also looking for new members and volunteers. Those interested should email [email protected] for details.
