Families, friends and work colleagues gathered at The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth on Saturday to take part in the inaugural 'Dawdle for Donkeys' fundraising walk.
As the walkers lined up on the start line, ready to take on the five or 10 kilometre routes, the grey skies and drizzle gave way to blue skies and sunshine, lifting the spirits of everyone taking part. Both walks gave people the chance to meet some of the resident donkeys and take in the fabulous countryside and stunning views over the Jurassic Coast.
Along the route, people were able to find out more about the donkeys that live at the Sanctuary and to hear their stories. Among them included the rescued Blackpool beach donkeys. The donkeys were part of a high profile case in 2018 who, after being subjected to years of abuse and inhumane treatment, were rescued and taken into the care of the animal welfare charity.
Staff from The Donkey Sanctuary's Welfare team were on hand to provide information and answer any questions, and it was comforting for walkers to know their fundraising efforts were helping to support donkeys such as these.
John Crouch, visitor engagement manager at The Donkey Sanctuary, said: "It was lovely to host such an inclusive event with everyone dawdling at their own pace, taking the time to see the donkeys and enjoy the amazing scenery. We'd like to thank everyone who took part and hope this annual event will grow and grow."
The inaugural 'Dawdle for Donkeys' was one of a number of special events to celebrate The Donkey Sanctuary's 50th anniversary. This milestone is an opportunity to both look back on the charity's landmark achievements and take stock of the massive challenges in a world where the suffering of animals remains abhorrent.
Since its foundation by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen in 1969, The Donkey Sanctuary has grown from a charity rescuing UK donkeys from neglect and abuse, to an international welfare organisation transforming the lives of millions of donkeys and mules, and the people who depend on them for a living.
