Following this morning's announcement on social media that Jurassic Paddle Sports was on 'rocky ground', East Devon District Council have issued the following response.

In a statement it said: "The council is pleased to say that it has agreed terms with Jurassic Paddle Sports to renew their concession at Sidmouth seafront for a further three seasons (2020, 2021 and 2022).

"We are firm supporters of this business particularly as it brings trade to the town from local people and tourists.

"The concession fee has increased and this is in line with similar concessions across the district.

"To reflect the nature of the beach activity, the business needs public liability insurance to protect their customers and themselves.

"The council's insurers have advised us of a reasonable amount of insurance cover that the business needs and it is up to the owner to make sure that this is in place.

"We have offered to talk with the concession holder about the signage, equipment and storage facilities on the beach and are happy to continue to do so."

Sidmouth councillor Denise Bickley pledged her full support for the business, she said: "I was shocked to read Guy's post and have, with other councillors from EDDC and Sidmouth Town Council been researching what could have been the problem.

"We are grateful that all seems to have been sorted out and have requested that any time an issue of this magnitude is on the horizon that we as ward councillors are informed so we can talk to the businesses involved.

"Guy's business is of course an asset to the town and beach, and something that so many people, including hundreds of our local children, benefit from during the summer.

"I will always do all I can to help."

Owner of Jurassic Paddle Sports, Guy Russel has been contacted for his response - check back for updates.
