Sidmouth seafront charity walk raises over £3k for Brain Tumour Research

By Guest 1st Apr 2022

The organisers of Sidmouth Does Wear A Hat Day would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part/supported/donated/volunteered/baked/publicised making the day such a success.

Though not quite completing the 1560-length target despite the best efforts of Sidmouth Running Club, Sidmouth Brownies and Guides and many, many walkers on the day; 1,492 lengths were clocked up which is approx. 963,000 steps, equating to the cost of funding 50 weeks of research-we were only 2 weeks short!

Everyone who took part was amazing but special mentions must go to Mark Andow a member of Sidmouth Running Club who completed 50 lengths, Julie and Phil Marish with Bas, Gemma and Kristy who made a day of it, Anthony Vosper and his lateral flow hat and young 'Harry Potter' who cheerfully completed 30 lengths.

Stephen French represented one of the event sponsors Bradleys Estate Agents and was on the seafront all day collecting for Brain Tumour Research and gifting Bradleys shopping bags with help from his colleagues.

Stephen said: "Bradleys Estate Agents were delighted to provide continued support for this deserved charity.

"It was a great day with so much awareness raised and so many generous donations. Sidmouth doing what Sidmouth does best."

The esplanade was certainly vibrant with colourful hats and fancy dress costumes (did anyone see Ledley, a t-rex, unicorn or sumo wrestler?) and the sound of Christine Hardy and her sax floating in the air. The stalls under the balcony of the sailing club were busy all day long and who would have thought the sun melting the cakes and chocolate would have been a problem in March! In the afternoon cream teas were served upstairs in the Sailing Club and it was lovely to see people sat on the balcony in the sun listening to Jurazzic and cheering on the walkers.

Angie Reid, Charlotte's mum, who was on Radio Devon promoting wear a hat day, would like to thank the sponsors, Kyle Baker Photography, LED Community Leisure, Bradleys Estate Agents, Sidmouth Sailing Club, The Arches and The Summer Shop and all the street collectors who gave up their time.

The biggest thank you from the wear a hat team is to the Sidmouth community and those visiting the area for their generosity and spirit of fun.

Over £2,600 was raised on the day and with donations made on our JustGiving page, £3,203 and still rising!
