They extinguished the blaze and the engine was left with 50 per cent damage.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "Fire Control received a call from staff at the Waitrose store in Sidmouth to reports of a vehicle smoking in the car park.

"One fire engine attended and confirmed that there was a fire involving the engine compartment of the vehicle.
