Improvements to the South West Coast Path in the Branscombe area are to be carried out by the National Trust.

The South West Coast Path Association is paying around half the £14,000 cost of the work in the East Cliff and West Cliff areas.

It includes replacing a steep, narrow, eroded set of steps with a zig-zag formation that will provide a more comfortable gradient for walkers.

There will also be space for rest points where people can stop and enjoy the views of the Jurassic Coast.

Nearby gateways that have deteriorated and become difficult to use will be replaced with longer-lasting, higher-quality hardwood, and a stile will be replaced with a self-closing gate to make access easier.

The South West Coast Path Association has just announced that it's raised more than £100,000 to help safeguard the future of the national trail, in a campaign launched around the time of the first lockdown. The fundraising gained momentum as people began appreciating the outdoors, and the natural environment, more and more during the Covid restrictions.

Director Julian Gray said: "The last year has been a challenging time for everyone and our focus has been making sure the Coast Path is open for people to reconnect with nature and meet with friends and family safely.

"It's amazing and very humbling to see what a difference people are making with their generous support, giving us the resources to get work done on the ground for this world class Trail on our doorstep."
