Hugh Grant speaks to Claire Wright supporters on the beach

Famous British actor, Hugh Grant, visited Sidmouth today as part of his ongoing political campaign to prevent a Tory majority in Thursday's General Election.

This is the seventh constituency that Grant has attended in person – joining Prospective Parliamentary Candidates with the potential to win against their Conservative counterparts.

The East Devon constituency has six candidates standing; Simon Jupp (Conservatives), Eleanor Rylance (Liberal Democrats), Dan Wilson (Labour), Henry Gent (Green Party), Peter Faithfull (Independent) and Claire Wright, also standing as an Independent politician.

It was Claire Wright who was focus of Grant's attention today however, not because of her political alignment or particular policies, but purely because she stands a real chance of winning against what would otherwise become a Tory seat.

It's not the first time the British public have associated Hugh Grant with a political agenda, albeit not in real life.

Most will remember his role in the 2003 Christmas hit film, 'Love Actually' where he plays the rather loveable, if somewhat ineffectual, Prime Minister with a penchant for throwing some serious shapes around number 10.

There are two parallels here: first off, the door-to-door knocking, or canvassing in this case and secondly the standing up to a greater power - all of which is taking place in the throws of the festive season.
