John Davis (aged 67), a keen amateur photographer based in Sidmouth, has embraced Instagram to share his landscape photos of East Devon.

John has been taking photos since his youth.

He told Nub News: "I bought myself a cheap Russian film camera for my 21st birthday and I just went on from there. I'm self-taught."

The majority of John's photos are landscapes, with a particular focus on Sidmouth. Occasionally they also feature his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Poppy.

John and his wife Lynn have lived in Sidmouth since 1983. His son Adam also lives in the town whilst his daughter Amy lives in Knowle. Both his children grew up in Sidmouth and have returned to bring up their families there after leaving for university.

Explaining why East Devon is such a good location for a photographer, John said: "You've got the hills, the parks and the seafront and town, so plenty of different places to wonder and take photographs of."

In the past John has created watercolours from a few of his photographs and sold them to shops, but in the last seven years he has enjoyed sharing his photos on Instagram, which he looks at as a way of promoting the East Devon area.

He now has over 1,200 followers.

He finds his photos of Sidmouth are particularly popular and people, especially holidaymakers, like to be reminded of the town when they are not there: "It's the kind of picture postcard photos that people seem to like."

"The cliffs of Sidmouth, either looking towards Exmouth or looking towards Beer, are pretty impressive. I'm starting to do more longer exposure photos which is a little artier and more abstract."
