The world record for the longest tin-can telephone conversation appears to have been broken in Sidmouth on Saturday (1 October).

The record, set by John Hems and others from the Sidmouth Science Festival, saw two yoghurt pots joined by a wire stretching 374 metres from Connaught Gardens to Bedford Steps on the Esplanade.

A message, "this is Sidmouth Science Festival world record tin can telephone", was spoken at one end and successfully heard by witnesses at the other end.

The world record has not yet been officially broken, with documentation currently being sent to Guinness World Records for ratification. The current record is 242 metres in Japan in 2019.

The telephone can be seen again and is open for public use on Saturday 8 October from 11am as part of the Sidmouth Science Festival.
