A new Women's Institute (WI) could be set up in Sidmouth if there is enough interest.

There is already a 'thriving' WI group that meets in the evening, and the new group would meet in the afternoon.

The first meeting, to gauge interest, will be held on Thursday 10 February at 2pm at Primley United Reformed Church on Primley Road.

Member Carla Scott said: "The Sidmouth WI currently offers a monthly meeting with a speaker and refreshments, they offer a monthly lunch, supper and craft group. We recently held a fayre and raised £1,000, giving half to Sidmouth Hospice at Home.

"I would expect the new WI to grow and develop such groups as well.

"It's also a good way to meet new people, only women can join and there is an annual membership of £44.

"I hope with a new WI it will generate a good place for people to meet, somewhere to join in activities, the WI is very much about education for women and is open to all ages so it doesn't need to be just for retired people (even though at 60 I am one of the youngest)."

So far, around 30 women have expressed an interest in coming to the meeting on 10 February.
