Built on the enthusiasm of a small group of people, and growing out of the success of the Sidmouth Science Festival, the Sid Valley Biodiversity Group has launched.

The aims of the group are to understand and record what is most valuable about the wildlife in the Sid Valley. Discussions will be held with landowners and businesses to develop existing expertise within the community.

There are plans to conduct extensive surveys on ecosystems within gardens, parks, cliffs, shores, heathland, woodlands, farmland and the River Sid; with opportunities to help enrich the biodiversity of the Sid Valley.

Spokesperson for the group, Charles Sinclair said: "During lockdown people's interest in and time for engagement with the natural world has increased.

"This is also on the back of activism around climate change which was taking place prior to Covid-19.

"We feel the timing for our initiative will find good levels of support in our community.

"With the backing of a wealth of expertise in this area, I believe we have the ability to make a significant impact on the enhancement of our local environment."
