OPINION: How getting fitter can help reduce the risks of Covid-19

According to Public Health England (PHE), studies have shown that being obese or overweight can increase the risk of serious illness or mortality from Coronavirus by 40%. And with the PHE also stating that more than 60% of adults in the UK fall into that category, that makes for some scary statistics.

We've all suffered during lock down with many of us living a more sedentary lifestyle while the gyms and fitness studios have been closed, and that impacts not only our physical health but our mental health too.

We're luckier than most living here in beautiful Sidmouth, with a plethora of lovely walks on our doorsteps, and the weather has also been pretty kind too. Many of us have taken the opportunity of getting out and exploring either on foot or by bike. (According to Forbes there has been a 677% year on year uplift on bike sales – I'm in the wrong trade!)

Over the last week, gyms and fitness studios have finally been able to open, with swimming pools about to follow, so people can get back to exercising, albeit with strict rules in place and, in many cases, changes to classes and facilities offered.

But the industry is on a knife edge, not only here in East Devon, but nationally – especially in areas that have been forced back into lock down.

I think what this horrible illness has shown is that if you look after yourself, keep in relatively good shape, and maintain a healthy weight, if you are unlucky enough to get it, then your chances of a full recovery are dramatically improved.

So, get back walking, get on your bikes, or get back to the studio. Maintain your core strength and flexibility by taking part in yoga, Pilates, Flow classes; do some weight training – whether that's heavy lifting in a gym or lifting lighter weights with more repetitions like Pump; burn those calories with some high energy cardio classes.Whatever your choice, just get moving.

Don't forget, at LC Fitness we offer a range of classes, both in the studio and now with our new online membership (meaning you can fit in the exercise at a time of your choosing - in your own home).

I also offer one-to-one or small group training, so if you do want to tackle your fitness and improve your health, get in touch.

Stay safe!
