Planning application submitted for new bridge in Sidmouth

Posted on: 13 August 2018A planning application has been submitted for a new bridge over the River Sid in Sidmouth.Following a consultation earlier this year, Devon County Council has refined the design of the structure, amending its appearance and changing the materials which are proposed to be used.The planned new footbridge would replace Alma Bridge, and would be approximately 37 metres upstream from the existing structure.The bridge features a 19-metre span and would be accessed by short sections of steep ramps.

Councillor Stuart HughesCouncillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for bridges and County Councillor for Sidmouth, said: "We've listened to the comments made during the consultation and the design has been adapted to improve the appearance. We've also taken on board elements such as including a view point and seating on the east side where the new structure links to Hanger Path. We have continued discussions with the Town Council and District Council in finalising the design. By amending the design, I think we will have a bridge which will be well suited to the area and will be an asset to the town."Subject to planning approval, the County Council is planning for work to start in September 2019, after next year's Folk Festival, in order to minimise disruption on the Ham.
