Plans for new campsite near Sidmouth refused after over 100 objections
A planning application for a new campsite near Sidmouth has been refused by East Devon District Council after more than 100 objections.
The plans would have seen 52 acres of agricultural land north of Boswell Farm near Sidford become a caravan and campervan site for up to 16 pitches with a space for tents. A single-storey shower and toilet block would also have been built.
Stating its reasons for refusal, the council said it would have an "immediate and significant transformative impact" on the landscape to its "considerable detriment".
The local authority added that the development would also result in the loss of a significant area of the "best and most versatile agricultural land, classified Grade 2."
Concerns from members of the public objecting to the plans included pollution, environmental impact, and increased traffic.
Patricia Morgan, objecting, said: "The development would bring large and potentially dangerous increase in tow-vehicles, caravans and campervans to our narrow, country lanes."
Andrew Peck, objecting, said: "Currently the valley provides tranquillity for all to enjoy. Allowing 16 permanent caravan pitches and other campers all year round would prove a blot on the landscape and increased noise, light and litter levels to an AONB.
"There are 10 campsites within a four-mile radius of Harcombe... all of which have large facilities and capacity for campervans and caravans with safer access from the surrounding roads."
There were two comments in support, however.
Katie Lea, supporting, said: "The applicants, a young couple, are trying to expand their existing successful holiday business. It promotes the local and rural economy and is exactly the type of small application which should be supported."
