Roads across the county will soon benefit from a £18 million funding boost and pothole repair is a top priority.

All areas of Devon will benefit from the £18.75 million of highways funding received from central Government in the Autumn statement.

The record highways funding awarded to Devon in November was a share of £420 million nationwide.

The county council's cabinet member for highway management, councillor Stuart Hughes, said: "This significant additional investment announced in the autumn budget was extremely welcome to address the backlog of repairs for our road network.

"The additional funding has enabled us to get ahead with planning for the forthcoming year and each electoral division will receive a minimum of £60,000.

"This will mean that all parts of Devon benefit as a result of this funding. Officers will be working with each elected member to propose and agree how their share of the fund will be allocated."

Each county councillor's division will receive at least £60,000 of funding. Repair schemes are prioritised based on a number of factors including inspections, reported potholes, local councillor requests, and how busy the road is.

The funding, which is for road repairs and bridge maintenance, is in addition to the £41.13 million allocated for Devon's highway maintenance capital programme.
