Muddy Stilettos has put Sidmouth among the top 10 places to live in Devon.

Sidmouth's "seaside location, unspoilt open spaces and buzzing town centre, plus a very desirable range of period housing" all helped the town reach the online lifestyle website's Top 250 Best Places to Live 2023.

Other places in the county that made the list are Exmouth, Okehampton, Ashburton, Tiverton, Totnes, Topsham, Tavistock, Kingsbridge, and the St Leonard's area of Exeter.

A spokesperson for Muddy Stilettos wrote: "Where so many seaside towns have faded, Sidmouth on the South East Devon coast has retained its Regency lustre with an unspoilt beachfront and busy labyrinth of indie galleries, boutiques and cafes at its centre.

"But it's the very desirable range of period property, from thatched and Gothic to detached Victorian and Georgian family homes which has scooped it a spot in Muddy's Best Places to Live 2023.

"Sure, it's long been a Mecca for tourists and the well-heeled retired, but it's far from sleepy, especially in August when the annual Folk Festival comes to town. And away from the honeytraps, you'll find less-trod open spaces which the day-trippers rarely find, like the riverside park and community orchard, The Byes, which runs by the tranquil River Sid down to Lyme Bay."

The website named several Sidmouth businesses, dubbing Taste of Sidmouth "the locals' favourite" and highlighting Sidmouth Trawlers' fresh local fish and shellfish.

The history of the town was also highlighted, with the Sid Vale Association (which runs the museum) mentioned.

The spokesperson added: "You can also go blue plaque spotting to see where Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning once lived, or Connaught Gardens and the Clock Tower above Jacob's Ladder beach where donkeys once carried up chalk to the 18th century lime kiln."
