Sidmouth care home residents enjoy watching baby chicks hatch
Residents at all three of Doveleigh Care's homes across East Devon enjoyed looking after baby chicks in the run up to Easter.
Arcot House in Sidmouth, Dove Court in Seaton and Doveridge in Colyton all took part in the 'Incredible Eggs' scheme, which provides high-welfare hatching kits to care homes, schools and other settings across the country to promote education and wildlife conservation.
The chicks hatched within a few days of the homes receiving their kits and all the necessary equipment to look after the birds. The care home residents were able to take care of the chicks for a few days and they have now all been re-homed with their families or care home staff who will provide regular updates on their progress.
Staff at Dove Court in Seaton took the chicks on a tour of the home to meet all the residents, who said they really enjoyed looking after the birds. They even rolled up a ball of tin foil to see if they would play football, but they weren't very interested!
Resident Dulcie said it was a lovely reminder of her childhood growing up on a farm, while Shirley said she loved hearing them chirp first thing in the morning and wished they could stay in her room.
