Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce conducts first online meeting
For the first time in its history Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce has conducted one of its breakfast meetings online.
Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce meets every month for a breakfast meeting at the Kingswood Devoran Hotel, but this month was a very different affair. In the light of the coronavirus pandemic, the meeting was the first in the Chamber's history to be conducted completely on-line via Zoom.
The meeting, administered by Martin Crockett of EDIT, and hosted by Vice Chair Sally Mynard, attracted a large number of participants.
It began with a brief presentation and Q & A session with Adrian Coombe of Easterbrook Eaton & Co, who answered a number of questions regarding the new government measures to help businesses.
This was followed by a wide-ranging discussion on a number of issues with East Devon MP, Simon Jupp.
Mr Jupp commented generally on the general lockdown situation and in particular upon issues relevant to local businesses.
He stressed his desire to see businesses recover quickly once the virus is defeated.
A number of business representatives called for fresh investment for Sidmouth, including the release of the £330,000 held by EDDC in respect of Section 106 payments arising from the development of the Fortfield Hotel.
This money has been earmarked specifically for investment to promote tourism in Sidmouth, and Chamber members clearly felt that, after five years of waiting, now was the time for the money to be allocated and spent.
Members also commented on the quick and efficient working of the EDDC business rates department, who appear to have rapidly established a new operational system and have been in touch with businesses in an impressive way.
The 'virtual' meeting was judged to be a great success, and the Chamber expects to repeat the event, probably at the same time next month.
Simon Jupp MP said: "It was great to join the first ever online meeting if Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce.
"It was really good to hear that businesses are already receiving the government business grants straight into their bank accounts thanks to quick work by East Devon District Council.
"We need to all work together to beat the effects of the virus."
