A Sidmouth man who played a key part in improving the care given to people with dementia has received an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours List.

Alan Worthington, who worked in mental health services in Devon, identified a need for better communication between hospital staff treating people with acute dementia, and the family or friends who acted as the patient's carers.

He was instrumental in drawing up the Triangle of Care model that recognised the importance of involving carers in decisions affecting the patient's treatment, and keeping them fully informed.

The publication, 'Triangle of Care – Carers Included', which he co-authored, was adopted nationally as a 'best practice' guide for carers and healthcare professionals.

Alan Worthington has been awarded the MBE for services to mental health patients and their carers.
