East Devon Luncheon Club held its first lunch meeting of the club's season at the Victoria Hotel where the speaker was Andrew Monk, Senior Tour Guide at Powderham Castle.

Andrew gave a fascinating talk about the history of the castle going back to its origins in the 14th century. He spoke of many key moments in the history of Powderham through Tudor times, The Civil War, the relationship with Isambard Kingdom Brunel and many important events through the history of time, along with significant guests who have stayed at the castle.

Andrew talked about the very important role that the present Earl and Countess of Devon (Charlie and AJ Courtenay) are playing in developing new ideas such as concerts and other events for the castle going forward. They are the 28th generation of the family who have lived at the castle.

Simon Card, Chairman of the Club, said: "This first meeting of the Club for the season was a great success with nearly 80 members and guests attending. A number were new members and everybody really enjoyed the meeting. Many had visited Powderham in the past but, following the talk, were keen on going again."

The next meeting is on 15 November at the Victoria Hotel where the speaker will be Samantha Stott with a talk entitled "Anne of a 1000 days".
