Major resurfacing and drainage works will be carried out next month in Sidmouth, Devon County Council has said.
It will start on Monday 10 January on a 1.2km stretch of the A375, running from Temple Gardens down through Temple Street, Old Vicarage Road, and Fore Street to the roundabout with the Esplanade.
It comes after survey work on drains under the road in September discovered a number of damaged and disconnected pipes.
It is estimated that the scheme will take 12 weeks to complete, due to the additional drainage repairs.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Cabinet Member for Highway Management and County Councillor for Sidmouth, said: "The additional work that's necessary before carrying out resurfacing has added to the duration of the scheme, but the work has been timed to minimise disruption as much as possible.
"Please bear with us while work is ongoing – the end result should see a huge benefit for Sidmouth's main route into the town."
Road closures
The council has said that the following sections of the road will be closed on the following dates:
- From Wednesday 12 January - Salcombe Road to All Saints Road and roundabout (overnight road closures, 5:30pm to 7am, with some daytime work)
- Between Tuesday 18 January and Thursday 10 February - Fore Street and High Street drainage work (overnight road closures, 5:30pm to 7am, with daytime traffic lights, diversion in place)
