A Sidmouth cornet player has produced an entertaining singalong video for residents of care homes to enjoy.

In the video Trevor Heynes, chairman of the East Devon Day Time Band, performs a series of well-known songs on his cornet, interspersed with 'conversations' with a toy dog called Rainbow, in a room decorated with patriotic St George flags.

The series of songs on the 'Rainbow and Sidmouth Cornet Friends' Singalong' includes old favourites such as Daisy, Daisy, She'll be Coming Round the Mountain, Hello Dolly, Bye Bye Blackbird and When You're Smiling, and the words are displayed on the screen so that viewers can sing along.

The performance includes a reference to the fact that Covid-19 prevented this year's St George's Day celebrations, with Trevor playing There'll Always Be An England and Bugler's Holiday in a belated tribute, and promising another concert to mark the patron saint's day on April 23 next year.

An element of humour

The East Devon Day Time Band has the motto: 'Aiming for continuous improvement whilst at the same time having fun' - and Trevor's singalong video reflects this.

As well as jokes and amusing comments throughout the video, it features comedy credits at the end, with punning references to Rainbow performing in Phantom of the Dogera and winning a 'Barking Cup' football game with a last minute 'kennelty goal'. The credits also contain humorous references to the Covid pandemic and several politicians.

The singalong video is the second Trevor has produced with Rainbow – he previously put together a Christmas version. He said he hoped the videos would 'lift spirits and bring a smile' among care home residents.

Of the latest video, he said: "We have had some excellent responses from local care homes that their residents had very much enjoyed our video again, including favourable feedback from Alzheimer's Society and Mencap national offices."
