Sidmouth Primary School's plans for a remodelling and expansion have been recommended for approval by East Devon district councillors.
At the council's consultative planning committee meeting this morning (Wednesday, September 1), councillors supported the proposal to consolidate the school on two of its three existing sites and build new facilities – as reported by Sidmouth Nub News here here.
The plans involve improving or replacing buildings at the Manstone Avenue site, which will then be able to accept an additional 60 pupils. The Woolbrook Road site will have a new all-weather play area. The Vicarage Road site will then become surplus to requirements.
The application pointed out that the changes will lead to money savings and a much more efficient way of running the school, with benefits for staff and pupils from no longer being split between three sites.
Councillors accepted that concerns had been raised about potential parking problems caused by the increase in pupil numbers, but thought arrangements could be made to avoid these issues. Suggestions included a 'parking exclusion zone' and new pedestrian access routes to reduce the need for parking close to the school.
Funding for the project has been granted by the Government, but Sidmouth councillor Denise Bickley pointed out that this is a 'one-off payment' and described it as a 'huge opportunity' for the school. Cllr Bruce de Saram said the scheme is 'a win-win for everyone'.
Sidmouth Nub News will publish a full report on the meeting, provided by the Local Democracy Reporter, as soon as this is available.
