Sidmouth Town Council responsibilities explained

If you live in the Sidmouth area you are served by three different local councils, each responsible for different areas.

As a Sid Valley resident it may not always be clear which council is responsible for which areas.

Sidmouth Nub News has put together a handy guide to help you know which council to go to when you need help.

Sidmouth Town Council (STC), covers the areas of Sidmouth, Sidford, Sidbury and Salcombe Regis. STC is responsible for:

- Alma Lane Field

- The Arches consisting of: Arches (occupied by Sidmouth Life Saving Club), Public Toilet and

Showers plus Jurassic Coast Interpretation Centre

- Blackmore Gardens Conservatory (The gardens are owned and managed by EDDC)

- Christmas lights

- Fire Beacon Hill (Harpford Common) – managed in partnership between STC, RSPB, EDDC

- Flower beds and planters at town entrances

- Grants to help local organisations

- Grass verges – Highway visibility splays only

- Helping businesses to promote Tourism (Town Guide, Directory, Map, VisitSidmouth website,

Webcams, Air Display)

- Hopper Bus

- Long Park (including the play park)

- Manstone Multi-Use Games Area

- Manstone Skatepark

- Manstone Youth Centre – managed and operated by Young Devon

- Public access noticeboards

- Three Cornered Plot Flag poles

- Sandbags for emergencies (bags only)

- Statutory Consultation on planning

- Sidmouth Golf Course – managed and maintained by Sidmouth Golf Club

- Sidmouth Information Centre

- Sidmouth Town Council Offices, Woolcombe House

- Swimming platform

- Stowford Community Centre - operated and managed by Stowford Community Centre CIC

- Water drinking /bottle refilling fountains

- War Memorials at Sidbury and Salcombe Regis

As Trustee, Sidmouth Town Council is also responsible for:

- The Ham (including the playpark and fishermen's yard and shed)

- Hope Cottage (Sidmouth Museum) Operated and maintained by the Sid Vale Association

- Manstone Recreation Field

- Salcombe Regis Recreation Field

- Salcombe Regis Allotment Field – managed by SVA

East Devon District Council (EDDC) covers the district council area of south eastern Devon and is

responsible for services including:

- Allotments

- Beaches

- Building Control

- Business and Investment

- Business Rates collections (set by Central Government)

- Bus shelters

- Car Parks

- Cemeteries

- Coastal Protection

- Community Safety

- Countryside

- Council Tax collections (set by Central Government)

- Dog Bins (STC contributes to the emptying of some)

- Electoral Registration and Elections

- Emergency Planning

- Environmental Health

- Housing

- Licensing

- Rubbish collections

- Recycling collections

- some play areas and play equipment

- Planning applications

- Public Toilets (STC contributes to keeping toilets open all year)

Devon County Council (DCC) is responsible for services across the whole of the Devon (excluding,

Plymouth and Torbay), including:

- Blue Badges for disabled parking

- Bus Passes (National scheme only)

- Dangerous Structures and walls

- Child Protection

- Citizenship

- Cycleways

- Education

- Fire and public safety

- Grass Verges (not highway visibility splays)

- Libraries

- Pavements

- Residential Homes

- Roads

- Planning (planning issues relating to mineral, waste and County Council developments)

- Public Transport

- Traffic Management

- Street Lighting

- Social care

- Trading standards

- Waste management

- Youth Services
