Alpaca poo is playing a central role in a Sidbury fundraiser with a difference.

This year Sidbury Cricket Club ventures back into the Devon League for the first time in 20 years, along with a burgeoning junior section with both boys and girls teams, money at the club is tight.

Running a village cricket club is not easy and coming up with new fundraising ideas is always a struggle but the club has come up a rather unique idea, The Dungraiser!

The Cricket pitch has been surveyed by Blackdown Surveyors and divided into 800 3m x 3m squares.

On Wednesday, May 1, at Sidbury Cricket Club, Millennium Field, three Alpacas from Bearhouse Alpaca Farm will be walked to three different areas of the Sidbury Cricket Club and set loose.

When the first one chooses a suitable place to do its business, a GPS beacon will be put into the ground and the corresponding location will be revealed on a computer screen in the pavilion.

Whoever holds the 3m x 3m square that the beacon is in wins £250. In the event of a tie, the first prize will be halved but the Blackdown Surveys adjudicator's decision is final.

There will then be a draw for the remaining prizes and there will be a BBQ and refreshments will available on the day. Payment - £1 per square.

Club spokesman Mark Bishop said: "We don't have the capacity to enable you to reserve your chosen squares before you pay online, but you can request your numbers when you pay by commenting on the just giving payment page.

"If the square you request has already been allocated, you will be given the nearest available square. We will post an updated version of the picture of the ground, showing the available squares, each week. If you just want to take a chance, simply make your payment and write 'lucky dip'.

"If you prefer to be the master of your own destiny - there is an aerial picture of the ground that has been divided up into 3m squares in The Red Lion in Sidbury. Why not drop in, choose your squares and have a drink or something to eat? See Richard behind the bar to pay.

"So, take a chance, support the club, and come and join us on May 1 to start the new season in this unique fashion!"
