A yellow wind warning has been issued for Devon by the Met Office, as Storm Evert is due to sweep across the south west.

The warning takes effect at 8pm this evening (Thursday, July 29) and ends at midday on Friday.

A low pressure system will move in from the west. An amber warning is in place for Cornwall, which will see the strongest winds of up to 75mph, with parts of Devon experiencing gusts of 40 to 60mph.

The strong winds could bring down trees and cause damage to temporary outdoor structures. Large waves are expected in coastal areas.

Sidmouth councillor Stuart Hughes, who's also the county council's cabinet member for highway management, said:

"We would urge people to take extra care when out and about from this evening and take extreme care if driving.

"These unseasonal storms are likely to create challenging conditions, and there could be fallen trees and debris on the roads, along with the risk of localised flooding.

"With thousands of visitors in the county at the moment, people staying at campsites should be aware of the risk of the forecast strong winds, and we would urge people not to 'storm-watch' on seafront areas."
