It's good to get your fingers in the soil

Year one children from Sidmouth Primary School helped the volunteers from Sidmouth Arboretum plant a community orchard beside Stowford Community Centre on Friday.

The trees were paid for through generous sponsorship by local insurance company The Exeter, as were the trees planted on two other sites in the last few weeks.

Devon County Council says it's still expecting the construction of a new footbridge in Sidmouth to be completed in the Spring, despite recent storms.

Work is progressing well on the scheme to develop the structure to replace Alma Bridge, with the cliff re-profiling and stabilisation work having been completed. The piled foundations for the bridge abutment, columns and river training wall have also been finished by contractor MacPlant Construction Ltd.

East Devon District Council has approved a £5 rise in council tax for next year as political slanging matches broke out over possible future borrowing proposals to upgrade council homes to tackle the climate emergency.

Following previous debates by the council's overview, scrutiny, housing review board and cabinet committees, the proposed 2020/21 budget was almost unanimously supported at Wednesday night's full council meeting.
