Doveleigh Care residents are once again enjoying the open air and a change of scene, now that outings are possible following the easing of Covid restrictions. The excursions were introduced gradually, with residents initially being taken for a drive to another area and staying in the vehicle – either one of Doveleigh Care's own Dove Bugs or the Dove Bus.
Senior manager Samantha Evens said: "Then they started to get out in quiet areas and sit on a bench, or our camping chairs. They were so happy, they loved the fresh air and new scenery. We have always been lucky to have the vehicles to take them out, so when they couldn't it was tough, although we brought as much as we could to the home."
Naturally, the safety of residents has been the top priority.
Samantha said: "All our vehicles have a car safety pack which includes, PPE, hand wipes, hand gel and tissues, to ensure they have everything they need to ensure everyone is safe. Residents are also offered regular testing."
So far, the outings haven't included visits to indoor cafes or restaurants. The residents have enjoyed takeaway drinks and snacks, and outings next month will include visits to fish and chip shops, again with all necessary Covid precautions in place.
There have been no cases of Covid-19 in any of Doveleigh Care's three homes in Sidmouth, Seaton and Colyton and every effort is being made to make residents feel that the trips outside are an extension of the well-protected care home environment.
Samantha said: "The residents trust us, know we have kept them safe and will always put their safety first."
