Man rescued from drain suffers hypothermia

Fire rescue services were called to help a man who had become trapped in a drain at Hawkins Lane in West Hill, near Ottery St Mary, at 10.23am today.

According to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue: "One fire appliance from Ottery St Mary was mobilised to a report of an elderly man with his arm trapped in an external drain.

"On arrival at the incident fire crews requested the ambulance service for the 80-year-old male, as he was suffering from hypothermia.

"The casualty had his arm trapped inside the drain up to his shoulder - crews released the male and assisted him by helping him to change into warm and dry clothes."
