Newton Poppleford murder trial delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic

By The Editor 12th Jun 2020

A murder trial following the death of a Newton Poppleford man has been delayed until September due to the coronavirus outbreak and logistical problems around social distancing.

On January 9 this year 47-year-old Geoffrey Pearce was found dead in a caravan on the outskirts of Newton Poppleford.

Former Exmouth resident Lewis Finch, 31, now of Briseham Road in Brixham, has pleaded not guilty to the murder.

Exeter Crown Court has confirmed that neither the prosecution or defence have been able to fully prepare their cases due to the impact of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Crucial reports from forensics experts have not yet been supplied to the court and a psychological report on Mr Finch has not been carried out.

Social distancing rules have also hampered attempts to form a full 12 person jury for the trial.

Exeter Crown Court has rescheduled the trial for September 28. Mr Finch will remain in custody until the date of the trial.
