Opportunity for musicians and dancers to join Sidmouth Steppers

By Guest 18th Sep 2023

Sidmouth Steppers rounded off their 25th dance out season at the very hot and sunny Swanage folk festival with over 60 other dance sides; most of which ended up in the sea to cool off!

Wearing their striking red, white and blue costumes they are synonymous with Sidmouth and are proud to represent their home town at events and festivals near and far. The North West Morris side has been dancing on Sidmouth seafront on Tuesday evenings throughout the Summer collecting money for two local charities and receiving great feedback from visitors and locals out for an evening stroll.

As the nights draw in practice sessions begin and October is an opportunity for new dancers (female 18+) and musicians (male and female 18+) to come and have a go. No dancing experience is necessary and all instruments are welcome. There is no commitment to join beyond the taster sessions but Sidmouth Steppers would be delighted if you did especially as they have just said farewell to Marlene and David Butler last week. Marlene joined the side in 2011, having only just moved to Sidmouth and not knowing anything much about Morris Dancing but soon became a regular recognisable smiling dancer in the side. David supported the side on outs carrying kit and later joined the musicians playing one of his many bass guitars.

Our last cohort of 'newbies' were all new to the area and have since formed strong friendships with each other and their partners. You will also become part of the very friendly and welcoming wider folk community too at festivals and local events.  If it is something you have thought about or even if you haven't please pop along to The Guide Hut, Lawn Vista, Sidmouth on Tuesday 3rd and 10th October at 7.30pm. All you need is a pair of trainers, comfy clothes and a drink.

For further information please email [email protected] or send a message through Sidmouth Steppers face book page.

We look forward to seeing you.
