Sidmouth and Exmouth fire crews were called to an open fire at Hawkerland on Woodbury Common last night (June 30).

According to Sidmouth Fire Station: "Both of the Exmouth Fire Station appliances and Middlemoor Fire Station also attended.

"The fire was located by the roadside and measured approximately 10 x 3 metres.

"The fire was extinguished using high pressure hose reels and covered with a blanket of compressed air foam.

"This was very fortunate not to spread rapidly. Luckily the position by the road and wind direction helped contain the blaze."
