Firefighters in Sidmouth have issued advice to the friends and family of older residents who live alone after having difficulty coming to the rescue of an elderly lady in the town.

On Tuesday, November 26, firefighters in Sidmouth were called to a house in the town to help paramedics gain access to an elderly woman in distress.

The fire crew had to force entry into the house because all the doors were locked and the keys were hidden within the property and unfortunately the occupier could not remember where she hid them

A spokesperson for Sidmouth Fire Station said: "Fortunately the elderly female was OK, she has been taken to hospital as a precaution but was in good spirits.

"The crew had to force entry to the property. All the doors were locked and the keys hidden within the property, unfortunately the occupier could not remember where she hid them."

Sidmouth Nub News also contacted Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service for more advice on the subject, a spokesperson said: "Do you have elderly relatives or friends that live alone? In an emergency would we be able to contact you?

"Putting 'ICE" (in case of emergency) next to your name either in an address book by the landline or on your mobile phone means firefighters, police, or doctors can quickly reach you."

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service also offers free Home Safety Visits:

"The call takes no longer than five minutes after which you may be offered a home safety visit," added the fire service spokesperson.

"The visit takes less than 30 minutes, we provide advice and fit a free smoke detector if required.

"You are important to us. If you would like a free home safety visit please call 0800 05 02 999."

Don't let yourself or your loved ones be the next victim of fire. Follow these simple steps and reduce the risk:

- Fit a working smoke alarm.

- Take care when cooking and never leave cooking food unattended.

- Plan and practise your escape route.

- Make a bedtime check.

- Don't overload sockets.

- Put cigarettes right out.

- Use candles carefully.

- Have your chimney swept regularly.
