The previous Conservative MP for East Devon has been given a place in the House of Lords.
Sir Hugo Swire, who was MP for the East Devon constituency (which includes Sidmouth) from 2001 to 2019, has been made a life peer in a list of peerages recommended by Boris Johnson.
The titles of life peers cannot be inherited.
Sir Hugo, 62, retired as MP for East Devon in 2019 and was succeeded by Conservative Simon Jupp.
In response to the news announced by 10 Downing Street on Friday 14 October, he tweeted: "Honoured and delighted to be going to the House of Lords."
