Knightstone, a Grade I listed medieval manor just south of Ottery St Mary, is now for sale for a guide price of £4.5m.

The 14th century home is currently being marketed by estate agency Knight Frank as a freehold.

Built by Thomas de Bittlesgate in 1380, it is described as "one of the country's best-preserved Grade I listed medieval manor houses", and a "family home of exceptional quality with a fascinating history".

Knightstone was once owned by Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk, who was beheaded in 1554 by Queen Mary I for his part in Wyatt's Rebellion (a plot to overthrow the Queen over her wish to marry King Philip II of Spain, a Catholic). His daughter, Lady Jane Grey, was also executed.

It has recently undergone an "extensive and sympathetic restoration, in consultation with English Heritage" and has been lived in for the past two decades by a man from Sweden named Jan-Eric Osterlund.

The manor has a central great hall, with rooms off and two wings, and a central courtyard to the rear. The great hall has original medieval beams, a Jacobean plaster frieze, a "magnificent" fireplace and underfloor heating.

The nearby library is described as "a snug and cosy room" and also has underfloor heating.

The drawing room has a fireplace and views over the gardens, while the kitchen has two Miele ovens, a large Brittania range with gas hob, and a central breakfast bar.

There are nine bathrooms in total, and 10 bedrooms.
