A 4x4 vehicle was washed onto Sidmouth beach at the eastern end of the Esplanade on Wednesday night (1 November) amid strong winds and large waves breaking across the road during Storm Ciarán.

The occupants of the vehicle managed to get out safely and no-one was injured.

There was a large emergency response with Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat, HM Coastguard, the police and fire service called to the scene at around 9pm.

It was deemed too dangerous to recover the vehicle at the time, and the vehicle was reportedly last seen at 7am this morning before soon afterwards being dragged out to sea by the breaking swell.
