What's on this weekend: Sidmouth Folk Festival

Sidmouth Folk Festival begins tomorrow, Friday 29 July, returning to the town for its 68th year.

It will last until next Friday 5 August. Some pre-festival events will be held this evening.

Here are some of Sidmouth Nub News' picks of highlights throughout the week:

Sidmouth Folk Festival Highlights

Thursday 28 July

Festivities will kick off at 7.30pm with the traditional informal start in Market Square with the Sidmouth Steppers, Great Western Morris, Sidmouth Traditional Mummers and Mrs Midnight's.

There will also be a pre-festival show on the Ham with Steeleye Span.

Friday 29 July

Events last from 12pm to 1.15am on Friday.

A lunchtime ceilidh will take place at 12pm in the Anchor Inn Garden, followed by a puppet show with music on the Ham at 2.30pm.

Other highlights include a dance workshop for absolute beginners at St Teresa's Church Hall at 4.30pm, several concerts all beginning at 8pm around the town, and another late-night ceilidh at the Bulverton marquee at 11pm.

Saturday 30 July

Events last from 9.30am to 1.15am on Saturday.

Highlights include a rapper dance workshop with sword handling at St Teresa's Church Hall at 9.30am, a hurdy gurdy workshop at 11am at the rugby club, a traditional pub session at the Volunteer Inn at 12pm, a Danish dance workshop at the Conservative Club at 2.15pm, and an Arthurian Tales theatre workshop at the Unitarian Church at 7.30pm.

Sunday 31 July

Events last from 9.15am to 1.15am on Sunday.

Highlights include a North West Morris workshop at the Bulverton marquee at 9.15am, the Sidmouth Festival Choir at 9.30am at the Manor Pavilion Theatre, the Folk Festival Christian Service at Connaught Gardens at 10.30am, Sidmouth Horse Trials at 1.30pm at Port Royal, a kinetic sculpture workshop at the Bulverton marquee at 4pm, and various concerts around town at 8pm.

Monday 1 August

Events last from 9.30am to 1.15am on Monday.

Highlights include a beginner's tin whistle workshop at the Woodlands Hotel at 9.30am, a mummers play workshop at the All Saints Church hall at 2.10pm, a family puppet show at All Saints Church hall at 7pm, a grand ceilidh night at the Blackmore Gardens marquee at 7.30pm, and concerts around town at 8pm.

Tuesday 2 August

Events last from 9.30am to 1.15am on Tuesday.

Highlights include a Lancashire step clog workshop at the Bulverton marquee at 9.30am, a Sidmouth Big Band workshop at the rugby club at 11.30am, a Scottish country dance workshop at St Teresa's Church Hall at 3.50pm, concerts around town at 8pm.

Wednesday 3 August

Events last from 9.30am to 1.15am on Wednesday.

Highlights include an Appalachian dance workshop at the Bulverton marquee at 9.30am, a production of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table at the Blackmore Craft Stage Gardens at 5pm, an Irish dance evening at St Teresa's Church Hall at 7.30pm, and concerts around town at 8pm.

Thursday 4 August

Events last from 9.30am to 1.15am on Thursday.

Highlights include a storytelling circle for adults at Trumps Court at 9.30am, a procession along the seafront at 2.30pm, and a concert with Kate Rusby at the Ham at 8pm.

Friday 5 August

Events last from 9.30am to 1.15am on Friday.

Highlights include various morris and stomp dance displays on the seafront at 11am, a Hiroshima day commemoration at the Sensory Garden at 1.30pm, and a torchlight procession along the seafront 10pm.
