Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce works to promote, represent and lobby on behalf of the local business community and the High Street.

We held our AGM early in March when David Cook, former CEO of Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary was elected Chairman. David said that some see doom and gloom for our High Street, but he sees it differently- an international picture with Sidmouth being such a lovely place.

He notes most shops have now got 'let by' signs, suggesting that things are already improving. He will be ably assisted by Sally Mynard of Alpine Park Cottages as Vice-Chairman.

David said he hoped we could attract more retail businesses to be members of the Chamber and to join the committee.

Sally is going to be the organiser of Late Night Shopping 2019 – on Friday December 6 – being the first Friday of the month as ever.

We have already had a committee brainstorm session, followed by a public meeting in late February at which several new ideas, and some tried and tested ones, have come to the fore. Watch this space!

So far this quarter, the Chamber has been asked to make representation to EDDC/TC on the following: Town Centre viability, Resident's Own Parking, Manor Road Car Park, Sid Valley Neighbourhood Plan, Control of Advertising, Planning Policy re Local List Guide and we have made an application for funds from Historic England.

We also regularly attend the quarterly Town Council Economic and Tourism meetings at which we have an opportunity to make suggestions.

We did wonder if our name was a bit too formal but decided to stick with it because it allows us statutory representation, is a recognised business link for EDDC and the Town Council, is recognised by Highways England and is the organisational name of every town's major business organisation.

Everyone is welcome at our Open Breakfasts (second Wednesday of every month) details can be found on www.sidmouthchamber.co.uk where you can also find out how to become a member.

Written by Sylvia Brownlee, Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce Secretary.
