Tips on keeping fit and getting back to the gym as lock down restrictions ease

As we go to press, it looks like life will look a little more normal from early July - especially for the health and fitness industry. But naturally it will come with some changes.

Gyms and fitness studios have been closed since mid-March, with many - like us here at LC Fitness - moving online to keep the community's bodies and minds healthy during this tough time. We've found it a great way to keep in touch with clients, keeping them motivated, fit, and most of all sane. But there is no substitute for face-to-face sessions and the camaraderie and social aspect they bring.

Understandably, you may feel nervous about going back to your gym or studio, so we want to reassure you as best we can. Of course, we can only speak from our own perspective - but all local gyms and instructors should be following the same guidelines as we are.

Behind the scenes, we are busy working, following Government, trade bodies', and our insurer's advice. When we do re-open, capacity will be restricted, with two-metre markings clearly laid out, inside and out. Pre-booking will also be essential.

Classes may be restricted to ensure no contact is made with other gym-goers and no equipment is being shared. At LC Fitness, that sadly means no Boxercise or Circuits classes. If you have your own equipment, you will also be encouraged to use it (e.g. yoga mats); all studio equipment will be cleaned and sanitised after every use, as will the studio itself.

Relaxed lock down guidelines already mean that we can carry out private one-to-one sessions outside, and with the latest announcement that up to six people can meet up (keeping to social distancing guidelines), it means that we are looking at ways to re-open some of the group classes for up to five people. We can also offer private group sessions in a large garden for families or groups of friends - again, though, strict social distancing rules will need to be applied.

At LC Fitness and in the wider industry, instructors are keen to keep you fit and motivated during this stressful time. We will all be back and fully functioning as soon as we are able to, but until then, why not join our free Saturday morning HIIT sessions at 9am on the LC Fitness Facebook page? Or join our friendly community for online classes - just ask us how.

Stay safe and stay healthy, Sidmouth! We'll see you all again very soon.
