Summer is here and Christmas is probably far from your thoughts, however, there is a shop in Sidmouth where it is Christmas every day.

Sidmouth Nub News dropped in on Ebenezer's Christmas Shop on Church Street today (June 12) to find out how the shop is keeping the Christmas spirit alive, even in June.

Ebenezer's manager, Caroline Baker, set up the festive business in August last year after her previous clothes business became untenable due to the impact of internet shopping.

"We used to sell tweed, cashmere and sheepskin but the online market had a huge impact on our business," said Caroline.

"I've always wanted a Christmas shop but I wasn't brave enough to do it here in Sidmouth. We had to do something different, you need a niche to draw people in.

"This really is a feel-good shop and we can deliver a service you can't get online."

Caroline loves Christmas and it seems her customers do too. Inside the shop you are greeted by classic Christmas songs, the smell of cinnamon and row upon row of festive toys, decorations and everything you need to make your family's Christmas even more festive.

Caroline said: "I love the hubbub of Christmas, people have more time for you and everyone's got a great Christmas story to tell. I think the shop stirs up a lot of nostalgia for people.

"The reaction from the community has been really positive, as far as I can remember we have only had one negative comment.

"The Victorian theme is perfect for Christmas, I'm not a very modern person myself so decorating the shop this way was a lot of fun."

The shop opened in August last year, around the same time as Sidmouth Airshow, and staff have been wishing customers a Merry Christmas ever since.

It is the place to go if you need baubles, decorations, stockings, bags, cards, wrapping paper, ribbon, toys, advent calendars, snow globes or wreaths.

In November and December Ebenezer's puts on Story Time events for children. Groups of youngsters gather round the shop's very own Father Christmas for festive stories, read by friend of the shop Emma Johns.

The children also receive freshly baked cookies from the cafe a few doors down, Someday Something, after which Father Christmas and the children read another story or sing carols.

This year Father Christmas will also be available to make home visits, for more information click the red button below.
