The principal of Sidmouth College has congratulated students today (Thursday 25 August), saying they have "achieved an exceptional year of GCSE results".
She added that this year's results were higher than those achieved over the past three years despite expectations for the opposite due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Students with exceptional grades highlighted by the school include:
- Tara Darlami: Achieved the highest grade 9 in all of her 10 GCSEs.
- Flora Hadfield: Achieved nine Grade 9s and a Grade 7.
- Charles Joy: Achieved eight Grade 9s, a Grade 8 and Grade 7.
- Poppy Teuton: Achieved seven Grade 9s, two Grade 8s and a Grade 7.
- Katie Swinney: Achieved six Grade 9s, two Grade 8s and Grade 7s.
- Ben Elsom: Achieved six Grade 9s, one Grade 8, Grade 7 and 6.
Students who achieved significantly higher than their target grades include Helna Areeckal, Jess Askham, Charlotte Austin-Rigby, Morgan Bain, Izzy Brown, Elsie Connick, Connie Mansell and Laura Sparks.
Principal of Sidmouth College Sarah Parsons said: "These results are the combination of not only the commitment and dedication of a group of incredible students but also of the staff and parents who have supported them over the last five years, especially through the challenges of the pandemic.
"It has been widely reported that grades were expected to drop back from 2021 levels to between last year and 2019. However, the results at the College this year are significantly higher than those achieved over the past three years, with 87% of students achieving a grade 4 in English or maths and 83% of students achieving a combined grade 4 in both subjects.
"This is a wonderful achievement for our students and will enable them to have the choices and options needed to continue with their education, many of them are choosing to return to our sixth form in September.
"One of the successes at the College is the Year 11 achievement role carried out by Mr Ingham-Hill. Students embrace the rigour that this role places on them, and the work of Mr Ingham-Hill has been pivotal in the results that students have achieved. A special mention must also go to Lin Bennett who works very closely with a number of students to support them particularly in English and maths.
"I would like to take this opportunity as Principal at Sidmouth College to reflect on what an incredible year we have had. Our results this summer have completed an overwhelmingly successful year for the College, with the very positive Ofsted inspection in the summer term and a great set of A level results last week.
"On behalf of the staff at the College we wish all our students continued success in the future and are looking forward to welcoming high numbers of students back into our sixth form in September."
