Sidmouth company launches new beer made with locally harvested kelp
A Sidmouth company that makes products from locally harvested seaweed has launched a new beer.
Brewed in partnership with Bristol natural beer producer Moor Brewery, Ebb Tides' latest creation 'Ladram Bay Bitter' is made with sugar kelp harvested from Ladram Bay.
Founded by Tony Coulson in 2016, Ebb Tides is now 80 per cent owned by the founder and director of Sidmouth Gin John Hammond.
John Hammond said: "Tony has been developing a range of costal beers.
"Our first was 'Danger Point' (Budleigh Salterton) which got a gold and a Great Taste star and this is our second in the range.
"Ladram is where we harvested the kelp from to make the beer."
A Moor Brewery spokesperson said: "Brewed in collaboration with Ebb Tides, award-winning sustainable harvesters of edible seaweeds, this is a malty best bitter enhanced with gentle umami flavours of sugar kelp and shiitake mushrooms.
"A hark back to the days before hops became predominant when roots, herbs, fruits and vegetables were added to beer to balance sweetness and provide nutrients."
The new beer is now available from The Dairy Shop on Church Street in Sidmouth.
