Sidmouth Nub News is pleased to announce the launch of free obituaries listings today as part of our continued commitment to building strong ties with the local community.
As a media organisation sitting right at the heart of the town, we have partnered with Sidmouth's Potbury's Funeral Service to offer the new service to their clients.
Obituaries can be any length, include up to 10 images and will be published completely free of charge on the Sidmouth Nub News website.
Family and friends can view and share the entries, which will remain on the obituaries section.
There is also the option to include a link to a crowdfunding page or charity if the family is requesting donations in memory of their loved one.
Nub News CEO Karl Hancock said: "Sidmouth Nub News is bringing obituaries back to life. They used to be some of the most well-read pages in local newspapers. We want to bring that back.
"We are giving Sidmouth residents a platform to celebrate the life of a loved one free of charge and this demonstrates our ongoing commitment to serving the community.
"We are delighted to partner with Potbury's Funeral Service to offer this valuable service.
"Like Sidmouth Nub News, the company is very much a fixture of the local community and shares the same values.
"We believe obituaries are an essential part of the local news scene."
Potbury's Funeral Service was originally part of Potbury's & Sons, Furniture Shop and Auction Rooms in Sidmouth, owned by the Lee family.
In 1992 the funeral business was acquired by Grassby Funeral Service of Dorchester. Grassby is an independent family run funeral business, with branches also at Hansford Funeral Service of Beer and Seaton and Norton Memorial Masons in Axminster as well as Dorchester, Weymouth, Wyke Regis, Blandford and Sturminster Newton.
In 2001 the business moved into the Old Fire Station and in 2015 expanded into new premises in Sidmouth High Street, which have been sensitively converted to provide a client reception area, offices, arrangement rooms and a chapel of rest facility.
Along with the excellent premises and facilities, the business is able to provide a high standard of service to the Sidmouth and East Devon community.
Managing Funeral Director Andy Downham said: "Our partnership with Nub News is really about keeping up with the times as the move away from the printed newspaper to online news becomes more evident, helping us to deliver a service fit for the 21st century.
"Obituaries are an important means for announcing deaths and funeral arrangements and we need to embrace the modern expectation for news and information on demand.
"We are pleased to partner with Sidmouth Nub News to offer our community this obituaries service which will be totally free to our clients.
"Announcing someone's sad passing and of course the funeral arrangements is so important, and this new online service allows us to do this more efficiently than ever before."
