Claire Wright on the end of 45 years of Conservative control in East Devon

The Conservatives lost control of East Devon District Council at last week's elections, in an unprecedented rout, which saw them lose a whopping 22 seats, reducing their numbers to just 18.

The Independents stormed to success with gains of 18 seats.

During the count, which was held in two separate places - Exmouth and Honiton - it was tense and exciting. By early afternoon it was clear that the 45 year Tory rule was over in East Devon and the Independents were set to be the biggest group on the council.

The Liberal Democrats gained two seats and for the first time in many years there is now a Green Party presence on the council, with two councillors elected!

It was an incredible and hugely exciting day. I'm now really looking forward to working with a new set of progressive and fully representative councillors who listen to local people and act on their concerns.
